Yesterday in Puerto Rico, the Supreme Court voted to uphold a law that prevents homosexual couples from adopting children.

According to The Huffington Post, the defeat was a narrow one: in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court decided that a child’s best interests is served by being in a family that is comprised of a mother and a father. In addition, the Court issued a statement that made it very clear that Puerto Rico, as a governmental entity, would not sanctify homosexual couples, nor grant them the same rights as heterosexual couples. “The state … has not criminalized their sentimental relationship, but it does not have a constitutional obligation to award this relationship the same rights that other relationships have when it comes to adoption procedures,” read the statement.
